Client

Primarily residents and business interests in Aston, Hertfordshire

The objective

To facilitate readily accessible, faster communication throughout the community, through the use of a confidential group email facility.

The rationale

Prior to the introduction of this service, the community relied largely on the monthly Parish Magazine to find out what was going on. Sometimes, publication timetables meant that news, became old news, and by the time the Magazine arrived some of the forthcoming events were no longer forthcoming. Less than 40% of residents subscribe to the magazine.

The Parish’s Neighbourhood Watch scheme was based on the Constabulary’s Ring Master system. This relies on the Coordinator taking phone messages and contacting others. The loss of the Coordinator and problems with the system meant that the scheme was less ineffective.

The approach

An article in the Parish Magazine outlined the proposal and invited interest. Negotiations with the Constabulary encouraged it to introduce electronic Neighbourhood Watch notices for speedy circulation around the community. By keeping emails to a minimum and relevant to residents needs the free membership has grown dramatically.

An example of feedback

As a fairly new member of the community I have been really impressed by the email communications. I am really glad that I moved to a village with such a pro-active community. Harriet Morrell, New Park Lane
